German watchmaker Glashütte Original is one of those brands that seemingly can do no wrong; offering a lot of the Teutonic design charm and of its “big brother” A. Lange & Sohne, but with greater emphasis on chronometric accuracy thanks to the thoroughly modern Calibre 36 movement (covered in detail here) that is progressively filtering into each of their collections. For Baselworld 2018 the brand are expanding their Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase collection to provide a variety of additional dial colors, as well as an increased case size of 42mm and a number of small-but-significant aesthetic changes. Cumulatively these changes bring a fresher, more contemporary look to these timepieces and make them suitable for everyday wear.

The 68th Berlinale, among the largest film festivals in the world, sets the stage for Germany-based Manufacture Glashütte Original Gub Replica Original to unveil their newest Chronograph — The Senator Chronograph Panorama Date — The Capital Edition (hang on while I catch my breath). This unique limited edition tries to station an “urban attitude” and is inspired by the capital of Germany, Berlin. Featuring a neat “Bourbon Grey” or “Dry Silver” dial, three distinct case options, and Glashütte’s penchant for turning chronographs in their minds (literally), there is a lot to unpack in one watch.Let’s start with the case and dial. The case measures in at 42mm x 14.6mm top and comes in three different materials — stainless steel, rose gold, and nickel. The stainless steel and rose gold models will include an in-house “fashioned” Bourbon Grey dial, although the platinum version includes a “Dry Silver” dial. At first look, this dial seems to be laid out nicely, but the more I look at it, the busier it feels. Less apparent in previous Senator Chronograph models with uniformed color schemes, I have a hard time feeling the vibe of this dial. Between the different colored indices along with the blue sub-dials, there’s a whole lot to unpack after I got beyond the first glances. The painted luminescent hour signs feature a Roman numeral index at 12 and 6 o’clock in a faux patina style. When lit, so it seems to be the exact same colour, but in the light the rest of the indicators are white. In the bottom of the dial is your normal “MADE IN GERMANY” across the base of the case.

Analysis

We went hands-on with the Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase when it first debuted back in 2016, and at the time this was primarily a dress watch with an exciting new calibre inside. The 2018 models do away with a lot of the flamboyance of their predecessors, trading in roman numerals at 12 and 6 o’clock and a railroad minute track for pointed indexes with luminous dots, a design element that strongly reminds me of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin (hands-on here). The brand’s signature leaf-shaped minute hand and spade-shaped hour hand have been replaced with simpler Dauphine hands, which offer a cleaner and less-ornate look without compromising on elegance. New dial colors are also available, including a galvanized silver grey with vertically brushed finishing, galvanized blue with sunray decoration, and a varnish matte white for the most traditional look.
